3 things to consider before swit
You’ve declared your major. You’ve taken a few classes. Now you’re bored and unmotivated.
You’ve declared your major. You’ve taken a few classes. Now you’re bored and unmotivated.
You talked to your friends. You’ve determined you want to switch majors, but you’re nervous. What if it’s too late? Will I graduate in time? What do I do?!
Like you, I’ve been in your position. Initially, I majored in finance. I wanted to work on Wall Street. I wanted to be an investment banker. Ultimately, I wanted to make a shit ton of money. Based on what I researched online — “which majors have the most earning potential?” — finance was the way to go.
Long story short, I took a few classes, and absolutely hated it. Finance was not for me. I was unhappy and unmotivated.
Here’re 3 indicators that it was time for me to switch my major.
You’re not interested in the coursework
If you have taken a few major classes, and you HATE the classes, it’s time to switch. Hating a class because you are uninterested in the material is different than hating a class because it is difficult. If a class is difficult, but you are interested in the course work, that’s a different story. Stick with it.
You are not interested in the exit opportunities
We choose to major in things because of potential exit opportunities. If you are not excited about the potential exit opportunities of your major, it’s time to switch. You should be excited to start your career. You may not be excited to graduate. But you should be excited and curious about where your degree will take you.
You are no longer curious
Your major should stimulate your mind. You should have a list of things you want to learn about. You should have a number of questions you want answered. You’re in school to learn. You’re in school to have your questions answered. If your bucket of questions is all dried up, maybe you should consider switching your major.
There are three reasons people choose their majors.
They’re in it for the money
They’re interested in the course work
Their parents wanted them to major in it
Here’s my advice. Pick something you are genuinely interested in. What do you think about in your free time? Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now? Where do you want to be? What questions do you need to be answered that will get you there?
