I would consider myself pretty good with people. I am not a huge extrovert, but I would consider myself a people’s person. But, like everything, I could be better.
This weekend, I began reading How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. It has been on my bookshelf for YEARS, and I have never gotten around to it. In the realm of self-help books, How to Win Friends and Influence People is a must-read. Like 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.
I am a big self-help guy. I’m always looking to find areas to improve. So, on a quest to improve my people skills, I started to read How to Win Friends and Influence People.
I am not done with the book yet, but here are my takeaways so far.
If you need some help developing your network, these will definitely give you some direction.
1. Do not criticize or complain — There is no value in criticism or complaining.
2. Everyone wants to feel important -If you want someone to like you, make them feel important. Talk about the topics that interest them, smile, and remember their name.
3. The only way to make someone do something is by making them want to do it -Sure, you can threaten someone to do something, but that’s not an excellent way to get someone to do what you want. You need to make people want to do what you want them to do.
4. Be a good listener-Listen to others, and they will think you are the best conversationalist in the world. People love to hear themselves talk. So, listen, and keep asking questions.
5. Talk to people about themselves and what they want to talk about-Find something someone likes and asks about it regularly and honestly. Be genuinely interested and intrigued. The most important person in someone’s life is them. Think about it, when you look at a group picture, the first person you look at it yourself! So, talk about other people.
