Money Advice for Young Professionals
The US is the best place to make money and Europe is the best place to spend it.
Pulled this from Scott Galloway's recent interview on MFM. I've heard it before, but I totally believe it.
Two years ago, we spent two weeks in Italy.
Last year, we spent two weeks in Spain.
I wouldn't consider myself particularly well-travelled — I’m getting there — but I think I've traveled enough to cast a vote that Europe is in fact a great place to spend money — especially on the food and wine.
Unpopular Opinion on the Future of Football
I think flag football is going to be huge. Like, eventually ending the football we know today huge.
Now, I don't know much about flag football, but when Rutgers wins anything, I pay attention.
The other day, I found out that Allison Gandlin (Rutgers Graduate) was named the NFL Flag Player of the Year. Pretty cool, and got me thinking about the sport. Honestly, I'm pretty bullish. And here's why…
Players want to be able to live comfortably after they retire.
Football is so damn hard on your body. And it’s only getting harder. Ever watch Kelce on Amazon Prime? Quarterback on Netflix?
These films helped me understand what these NFL guys actually go through… They are literally preparing themselves for war every single Sunday for 18 weeks straight — minus a bye week. Doesn’t matter what injury they might have or what mental state they might be in. They have to be on the field, playing at 100%, every, single, Sunday.
And all those little injuries they pick up throughout the season compound. Especially for guys who play in the league for a few seasons! Then they retire and their bodies are never the same. It’s sad. But here’s the thing.
Flag makes football more approachable for everyone. And allows people to play the game for longer!
The NFL is behind it. They're making it cool — so it seems. I think that’s the direction the league could going in. Thoughts?
A Poem Every Parent (and Future Parent) Should Read
I don’t have kids yet, but I’m stashing this poem in the back of my head for when I do.
Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is the way of foolishness.
Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples and pears.
Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.
And make the ordinary come alive for them.
The extraordinary will take care of itself.— William Martin
The TL;DR?
Don’t be the type of parent who’s constantly pushing their kid to strive for some extraordinary, unattainable life — they’re likely not going to be the next Mark Zuckerberg, Tom Brady, or Taylor Swift. Who wants that kind of life anyway?
Be the parent that helps their kid understand life’s simple beauties — like family time, good health, and high quality food.
This isn’t to say that your kids shouldn’t push themselves — they sure as hell should — but it’s more important for them to learn to stop and smell the roses and appreciate the little things.
