I’m not a great storyteller
I might write a weekly newsletter, but I’m not a great storyteller. Most of the things I’ve written are anecdotes — things that happen — or things I find interesting. Nothing wrong with that, but they aren’t stories.
The fact is that most people aren’t great storytellers. They share things that happen to them — like a lovely dinner they had with their fiance in Mallorca — but there’s no arc. No takeaway.
I don’t want to be one of those people. Why? Well Steve Jobs said it best…
The most powerful person in the world is the story teller. The storyteller sets the vision, values, and agenda of an entire generation that is to come.
Although that dinner in Mallorca might’ve been lovely, nobody really wants to hear about it. And if they say they do, they’re lying.
They want to hear about how you accidently booked a one star hotel with no AC that REEKED of cat piss, and what you learned from that experience. Why is that?
Because it’s more interesting and relatable. Someone might never go to Mallorca, but they can certainly connect with you over a shitty hotel experience — and that’s what storytelling is all about.
So yeah. Stories are pretty damn powerful. And that’s why I’m making an effort to learn how to be a better storyteller.
I just wrapped up Stephen King’s On Writing, and am not diving into Matthew Dick’s Storyworthy. Will be sharing more of what I learn in the weeks to come.
The truth about working hard
I grew up in a household that valued hard work. If you want something, work hard. If you don’t get it, you’re not working hard enough.
I think hard work is important. But you know what’s more important?
Working on the right things.
When we work hard for something we don’t believe in, it’s called stress.
When we work hard for something we love, it’s called passion.
Simon Sinek
If you’re working hard on the things you don’t believe in, you’re wasting your time and risk burning yourself out.
Take the time to figure out the stuff you love and work hard at that.
Why you should start taking fish oil
I never thought supplementing fish oil was important until I hearing this from Dr. Rhonda Patrick. Check out the full clip here, but this quote pretty much says it all…
Having a low omega-3 index is like smoking… People who smoke and get a lot of omega-3, have the same life expectancy as people who don’t smoke and have low omega-3.
WILD.
Needless to say, I’ve started supplementing fish oil daily. If you’re considering supplementing fish oil, here are 3 important things to look for when choosing one.
